Let’s face it: being an athlete is a contact sport, even if you’re a solo runner pounding the pavement. From tight hamstrings to creaky backs, the battle scars of pushing your limits can take a toll. But what if we told you that a little time on the yoga mat could save you a lot of time on the bench? Here at Runners’ Edge Alaska, we’re all about helping you stay in the game—and yoga might just be the secret weapon you didn’t know you needed.
Why Yoga? Because Your Body Will Thank You
You know those days when you feel like you’re made of steel… but in that stiff, rusty, can’t-bend-my-knees kind of way? That’s where yoga comes in. Think of it as WD-40 for your body—except it’s also great for your brain, your muscles, and just about every other part of you that screams, “Help!” after a tough workout. Stretching alone, will not provide lasting change, but the combination of mobility and strength provided through yoga can be a game changer for many.
Hip Pain
Hip pain is the Achilles’ heel (or hip) of many athletes, particularly runners and cyclists. Whether it’s due to tight hip flexors, weak glutes, or overuse, yoga can help. Some of our favorite poses to keep our hips happy are:
- Runners’ Lunge Variations (1)
- Figure 4 (2)
- Pigeon Pose (3)

Back Pain
Who hasn’t dealt with a cranky back at some point? Whether you’ve been hunched over your handlebars, or your spine’s had it with those endless miles on foot, yoga’s got your back—literally. Poses, like the ones listed below, can help support your spine, ease tension and help you stand tall (or at least straighter).
- Cat-Cow (1)
- Downward Dog (2)
Many poses in yoga challenge core strength too, which also helps protect your back from injury. Some of our favorite core strengthening poses are:
- Boat Pose (3)
- Plank Pose (4) and Side Plank Pose
- Dolphin Pose (5)
- Bridge Pose (6)

Knee Pain
Knees are the unsung heroes of most sports—until they start to protest, that is. If your knees are barking at you after too many miles or too many squats, yoga can help. Some of our favorite poses that help with knee pain are:
- Warrior Poses (1)
- Chair Pose (2)
These are particularly good for building the strength you need to support your knees, so you can keep doing what you love without wincing every time you stand up.

Shoulder Pain
From swimmers to weightlifters, shoulder pain is a common complaint among athletes. Tight shoulders can mess with your form and cause all sorts of issues. Yoga poses like:
- Thread the Needle (1)
- Child’s Pose (2)- Add a side stretch to make it extra juicy
You’ll be waving goodbye to pain—and maybe even showing off your new range of motion at your next race.

Mental Focus and Stress Relief
We know, we know—you’re already tough as nails. But even the toughest athletes can benefit from a little mental conditioning. Yoga isn’t just about the body; it’s also about the mind. In fact, researchers have found, that yoga provides significant benefits in managing conditions like depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and chronic pain. (1) Yoga promotes relaxation by shifting the body from the fight-or-flight response to a more calming, restorative state, which can lower heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. It also improves flexibility, muscle strength, cardiovascular health, and overall well-being.
Whether you’re trying to shake off pre-race jitters or just need a moment to breathe after a stressful day, yoga’s mindfulness techniques can help you stay calm, focused, and ready for whatever comes next. And let’s be honest—who doesn’t need a little Zen after a week of intense training?
Sounds good, but how to I get started?
