Spring into Running: 6-Week Series

Strength Training and Tendon Loading Class to Help Prevent Shin Splints, Achilles and Plantar Fascia Pain

WHEN:
April 3rd – May 8th
Every Monday

Time: 6-7 PM

Designed and Led By: Runners’ Edge Group Class Lead, Helen Cortes, PTA

Knowing spring is right around the corner for a runner is one of the most exciting feelings! Return to the trails or dry roads sun on your face, shed the layers… we’re finally back to running again! Unfortunately, that giddy energy leads many to lower extremity tendon injuries early in the season. The risk increases when we get back to running after taking a break (winter sports), and changing the terrain on which we run (e.g. indoors vs outdoors, flats vs mountains).

Shin splints are often ignored, but if left untreated they can progress to bone stress fractures. This can take you out of training and racing for over 8 weeks. Achilles tendon pain and plantar fascia pain can also get in the way of our running goals and routines. We don’t know about you, but summer is too short to have to sit out on epic trail runs because of an injury!

This class will focus on building up strength and load tolerance progressively with emphasis on, but not exclusively to, lower legs, feet and ankles.  Each class will also include additional recommendations to prevent shin splints injuries (e.g. how to optimize recovery after hard practices and games/races, soft tissue mobilization options, etc.) and preventing plantar fascia and Achilles’ pain so you are ready to SPRING INTO RUNNING!

Who is this class for?

  • Have you dealt with shin splints, Achilles tendon, or plantar fascia pain in past running seasons?
  • Are you transitioning from winter sports into spring/summer running?
  • Do you want to improve your agility and running speed?
  • YES? THEN THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU!
