Olympic Tips for Performance

Wow, what a ride! The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris had us on the edge of our seats! We got to see some of the world’s best athletes push their limits and show us what dedication and hard work look like. (Special shoutout to the Alaskan athletes, rugby player, Alev Kelter and cyclist, Kristen Faulkner!) While we were all glued to the screen, cheering for our favorite teams and athletes, we couldn’t help but pick up on some great lessons. Here are a few things we learned from this year’s games that can help all of us – whether you’re hitting the trails or the slopes – take our game to the next level.

Recovery is a Game Changer

This year’s Olympics really highlighted the importance of recovery, and artistic swimmer Jaime Czarkowski’s routine is a prime example of why it’s crucial. Competing in synchronized duets is incredibly demanding, requiring nearly nine hours of training per day, six days a week. Jaime and her teammates take their recovery just as seriously as their practice sessions. They don’t just take a day off; they incorporate a range of recovery techniques every night after practice and on rest days to keep their bodies in peak condition.

Jaime and her team use the sauna and ice bath at their gym to help their muscles relax and recover. They also rely on Normatec compression boots to reduce lactic acid buildup, do plenty of stretching and foam rolling before bed, and make sure to get massages and physical therapy regularly. These strategies are essential to their success, ensuring they feel their best in both training and competitions.

Take Away:

Don’t underestimate the power of a good recovery routine. Whether it’s an ice bath after a long run or just taking a day off to rest, your body will thank you. At Runners’ Edge Alaska, we can help you figure out a recovery plan that keeps you moving without wearing yourself out.

Technique Matters

Watching Katie Ledecky in the pool was like watching a masterclass in technique. She’s known for her perfect form and efficiency in the water, which helps her outpace the competition with what seems like minimal effort. It’s a reminder that sometimes it’s not just about how hard you work, but how smart you work.

Pay attention to your technique, whether you’re running, biking, or skiing. Little tweaks in your form can make a big difference in how you perform and feel. Our team at Runners’ Edge Alaska is here to help you fine-tune your technique so you can get the most out of your workouts.

Mental Game is Half the Battle

Did you catch any of the gymnastics events? The mental focus these athletes like Sunisa Lee have is off the charts. She talked about using visualization techniques to prepare for her routines, which helped her stay calm and focused under pressure. Not to mention Simone Biles who has changed the way the world looks at mental health and sport performance.

Take away:

Your mental game is just as important as your physical game. Techniques like visualization and mindfulness can help you stay focused and keep your nerves in check. It’s also important to take those rest days when you need them. Sometimes a little break is all you need to feel re-charged and ready to play!

Fuel Up Right

Take Away:

What you eat and drink can seriously impact your performance. Make sure you’re fueling up with the right nutrients and staying hydrated. At our clinic, we’ve got Thorne nutrition and sports performance supplements to help you out. Plus, we work with some awesome sports nutritionists and dietitians who’ve helped many of our clients get their nutrition just right.

Teamwork makes the dreamwork

The USA Women’s Soccer Team’s gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics was a testament to teamwork and strategic planning. Head coach Emma Hayes, assembled a roster of athletes that could play more than one position mattered with squad depth. She strategically picked players who could work together dynamically and adapt to the 17-day period of playing hard, with tight turn around between the games. Sure, Mallory Swanson put the ball in the net to win over Brazil in the final winning 1-0, but it took the entire team to set up that play. Relive all the goals HERE! Safe to say Coach Hayes put together a gold-winning team!
